Samsung got wrecked:
* Jury finds Samsung infringement of Apple utility, design patents for some (though not all) products
* Jury upholds Apple utility, design patents
* Jury upholds Apple trade dress '983
* Jury finds Samsung "diluted" Apple's registered iPhone, iPhone 3 and "Combination iPhone" trade dress on some products, not on others
* No Apple infringement of Samsung utility patents
* Jury found Samsung violated antitrust law by monopolizing markets related to the UMTS standard
Damages owed by Samsung:
* $2.3 billion and counting

No matter what phone you want it still costs eleventy hundred dollars, unless you're willing to sell your soul & chain your future to one shitty wireless company or the other for 2-12 years to get a subsidy that isn't worth the first six months of your fees, you can't reliably predict what your bill's going to be and you're more likely to get hit with weirdass hidden charges than to find a nickel on the sidewalk anymore. Want to pay your bill online? Surprise! It costs more then mailing a check. Except you have to enroll in paperless billing in order to get the free case and Beats by Dre(c)(r)(tm)(fk) headset. We can only sign you up for this special family sharing plan at a Best Buy in Kentucky, but if you buy the phone online we'll send a kid to your house the day after it arrives to help you program it (you should tip him a few dollars and give him a bottle of water). Near the end of your contract we'll send a signal to your phone to make it stop working, about a day after the warranty or insurance runs out but a few weeks before you're eligible for the next shitty subsidy on the newest overpriced handsets. Oh and your nighttime minutes start sixteen minutes after sundown but we use GMT not any time zone you've ever heard of! Good luck!
Buncha people about to lose jobs, if they haven't already. It's really dumb to infringe on copyrights. Dumber still to infringe on Apple's copyrights.
No, what's dumb is the US patent system giving apple patents on things they didn't invent, and no one should be able to patent. Patent law in the US is out of control and needs to be fixed.

Exactly. The apple patents are the tech equivalent of patenting 4 wheels on a car, or rectangular tv's, or having a flat screen. They're insanely, unfairly broad. They never should have been given in the first place and now look what's happened? People will probably lose their jobs, and a company has to pay over a billion dollars for using very basic features.
So you're saying you should be allowed to trademark how software and a GUI looks, but not physical hardware design? So anyone should be able to copy what a Dell Inspiron looks like and market it as a different brand? Or a MacBook Pro and market it as a different brand? Really?
I'm not entirely sure where to look now. I just heard them describe the patent on the news. They basically have a patent on touch-screen technology (using fingers to navigate, pinch-to-zoom, etc) even though some of the tech involved wasn't invented by them
You all should watch this TED video of Everything is a remix.
