I guess I'm ignorant on the subject - why would a national car rental agency be selling such newish cars? The results on the website show mostly 2011 cars. Do they normally update their fleet to the newest and greatest that quickly? Otherwise it makes me think they're just selling off problem cars.

HERTZ always keeps newest car fleets...never had a rental from them that was not the newest car model...

I guess they must make a lot of money on the actual rentals to be able to take the hit of buying a new car and selling it off in about a year for a sizable discount.
I hate it when people who have never bought a used car from Hertz says what they would never do. I have bought two and have known numerous others to buy them without ever having a problem. I am buying a Maxima for $6K less the same car at Carmax. Hertz renew there cars every year and either sell to consumers or to the dealers at auctions. These are cars that people buy from the dealers and pay thousands of dolllars more than they would have if bought straight from rental company.
I've never abused a rental car, so it cracks me up when people say used rental cars are abused. Not everyone is an animal behind the wheel of a borrowed car.
When I drove my first rental car I thought: wow! These cars have such good brakes!
After driving for like a mile I didn't realize that the emergency brakes were actually on...
Then the time came when I was in the market for a car of my own and realized that there are most likely other renters like me, which led me to be a little more suspicious of used cars from rental agencies
Purchased a used Altima from the dealership, it was a rental before the dealer got it. Lasted for 11 years, had 175,000 miles when I sold it with known engine issues. So they are OK if you want to save a bundle. I am in the market for a used but recent Toyota Matrix, AWD. They don't have AWD Matrix but their prices are about 3000 cheaper than dealership prices of 2011 matrix on ebay. So you will save dealer mark-up. You will pay close to what KBB private party price is.

I read the first line of your post and thought *I* posted it! That's exactly how I feel. There was a previous thread and so many people said "oh, I would NEVER buy an ex-rental" yet everyone who had, was saying it was a great deal for an almost new car.
Anyway. I got my car from Hertz Car Sales, along with my gf and aunt. My gf got her 1yr old Camry for $13.9K w/ 25K miles. Where else would we get a Camry so cheap? These are NOT "problem cars" -- Hertz is just turning over their cars. They tend to turn over their cars faster than the other rental agencies which is why I use Hertz exclusively when I travel even if they cost a little more.
