Did anyone try it with S2?

Sweet! Unlocked my girls GS3 and my Note II, both on T-mo. Tested and confirmed with Vodafone Sim Card. Thank you OP!!! Saved me the hassle of calling T-mobile and asking them to do it. Plus it's more fun this way anyway

Got this to work on the T-Mobile sgs3, popped in the AT&T sim card and i'm able to make calls. However the data does not work. Do I need to change the apn settings for the data to work with AT&T?

You have to pay for service no matter where you go, but if you go to another country, rather than being forced to use your AT&T SIM card, which will charge you international roaming, you can buy a prepaid SIM card from the country you are traveling to. You would have to switch the SIM cards and then you can use your unlocked phone on the international service plan.

GSM refers to use "Global System for Mobile communications". This is for devices that use SIM cards, specifically AT&T and T-Mobile devices in the US, and almost all devices every else in the world.

As for the S2, this will not work on it, but if you look at the bottom of this post, I explain how you should be able to unlock your phone.

If you buy it with AT&T or T-Mobile, you could unlock it, but you would still be signed up for a 2-yr contract for the voice and data service.

Unlocking the phone deals ONLY with the phone, not with your service. You will still have the service and you will still either have to pay the monthly fees or pay the early termination fee, whether you have the phone or not. The phone is yours. You can give it to whoever you want, but if you want people to use it overseas, it will have to be unlocked and they will have to use their own SIM card. You will also need to remove and keep your AT&T SIM card to use in another phone (which you will have to get) or will have to cancel your AT&T service and pay the ETF.

Was that for AT&T or T-Mobile? Those are the only carriers this will work for. Unlocking the phone does NOTHING to the contract. The contract is for service, it has nothing to do with the phone. You could sell the phone and you'd still have to pay your voice and data service.

Unlocking the phone only makes it possible for you to use the phone on other GSM networks, i.e. AT&T, T-Mobile, Rogers, basically all international networks, provided you have a SIM card for those networks (either with a monthly service or prepaid system).

Your phone is yours, it has nothing to do with the service. You are still under contract to use the service for 2 yrs.

This works ONLY for GSM phones, i.e. phones on AT&T, T-Mobile, or most international carrier. This will NOT work on CDMA/TDMA phones, specifically phones from Verizon or Sprint.

"Unlocking" means SIM unlocking, and since those services don't use SIM cards, they are not involved. As far as I know, you can use CDMA phones on other CDMA networks, but you would have to register the ID and pay some sort of phone change fee (but I'm not completely sure of this).

It doesn't work on the S2, but if you've had your phone for something like 90 days or 6 months (not sure which) with service on your GSM carrier, you can call them up and say you are going overseas and need to unlock your phone for use there. They should give you the SIM unlock code for your phone, which you would need to put in when you insert another network's SIM into your phone. If they try and say "you could use our service internationally" or something like that, just keep pressing that you may go to areas that don't have coverage and need other options. They should/will give it to you.

This goes with anyone who bought their phone from the service they are currently using. I've even heard of people doing this with the iPhone.

Yeah, you'd need to restore, then unlock, then root. It shouldn't be affected by rooting, as per other people's experience, but I haven't done it, so I can't say for sure.

The procedure works on T-Mobile SG3:

PERSO_NV_INIT IS SUCCESSFUL. Need to pop in a different card from AT&T to test.

Maybe a stupid question but my phone does have a slot for a SIM card, it has a Verizon SIM card in it. But I guess this is a CDMA card?

not too expensive considering the rollover minutes and 23% discount from work(premier account). I pay $90 each month for two s3s on family plan. 2gig data each.

why do i need to restore? rooting is not like using diff romz.
