T-Mobile $5/month 5GB Data Plan for Grandfathered/Classic Users

Hello everyone,

Recently, some people over at Howardforums on grandfathered/classic plans have discovered that their $20/month 5GB Preferred Android Web data plan was replaced with a $5/month 5GB "Pref Android Web Reduced" data plan. Details are as follows:

-$5/month for 5GB. Throttles after 5GB although some users have reported no throttling at all.

-Only works for Grandfathered and Classic plans, NOT Value plans.

-Get by calling 611 on your T-mobile phone and saying "cancel" at the prompt to reach the retentions/loyalty department.

-Loyalty CSR called it "Bridge to Value Preferred Web" and described it as a way of giving classic plan members a sample of Value cost savings.

-Despite the name, it does not require you to switch to Value at anytime, nor was I forced to extend my contract.

-This reduced data plan is not eligible as a choice for getting an upgraded smartphones. Upgrading a line with the $5 plan will change the line back to the $20 plan. It's not clear whether you add the $5 data plan on a line that has upgraded recently.

-This is not like T-zones/Web2Go in that it WILL work with any Android phone. I don't know about other types of phones.

K3U, do you know anything about this option mentioned above. Would like to hear an employee's take on it before I call and start asking.

There is a new plan for classic users and it not the BTV. It a "secret" plan. It 15 for 4.5 gb then throttle. That the plan I am on now you have to call a few time to get it. It seems like this plan not their csr radar at all. Just ask the CSR if they have the 4.5 gb plan on their list not the 5gb. And it better than the $10 for 200 mb or the $20 for 2 GB.

Thanks.

It's called Bridge to Value, or BTV for short.

What it does is that if you're on a Classic family plan and only some of the lines are 18 months and older and is eligible to move over to value. The perks of BTV is a $15 discount on qualifying data (2GB or higher) and it also gives a $5 discount for voice. Therefore making a total of $20 discount.

Example:
Classic Family Plan.................................Bridge to Value Line
$100 UNLIMITED TALK & TEXT.................$95 UNLIMITED TALK & TEXT
$30 UNLIMITED 4G LTE.......................... $15 UNLIMITED 4G LTE
..............................................................$20 Device Payment or EIP (Equipment Installment Plan)
$130 monthly + taxes..............................$130 monthly + taxes.

So basically the only good reason it is a good feature right now is that if you DON'T get into a new phone (device payment / EIP) then you'll just actually be utilizing the TRUE cost of data. Because Classic plans have device payments already incorporated into your bill. The whole reason behind BTV is to slowly migrate the eligible family members over to the new plan so when all of the lines are at 18 months you can migrate over completely to the value plan.

Here are the migration fees:

Months (Since Last Upgrade) : Fee
0-7 : $200
8-11 : $150
12 - 15 : $100
16-17 : $50
18+ : Free

You can actually get BTV without having to upgrade, just go to your local T-Mobile store and ask to see your plan. Then ask for BTV, don't get lured by the reps saying you have to upgrade because you don't.
But after the new SC plans came along, Classic upgrades (for non-business customers not doing third party upgrades) went extinct, right?

We got one of the $200 Galaxy S3s with $200 MIR in November. As soon as the rebate came (5 Months later) I went and got one of the Walmart activation kits, and activated the new SIM with the $30 Walmart Plan. I then called T-Mobile and they gladly ported our number from the contract plan to the $30 prepaid plan. When I got the final bill there was no ETF or Migration fee on it, just the amount that had showed on the last bill before I ported the number.
What $30 walmart plan? My girlfriend has a verizon plan and her contract is up. I saw a $45 straight talk plan...

Nevermind I found it. 100 mins for my girlfriend will not work at all. I'm sure she blows thru that in like 2 days. Unless its free mobile to mobile or you get 10 free lines of your choosing like on verizon... Any advice on a more minutes plan or does this one have mobile to mobile or anything?

Got it, hopefully saving $15 now, since I had 5GB for $20 previously.
What is with the typo lol.
And why does it say "Web Only"? Is that reffering to no tethering? Otherwise it seems redundant.
Sorry for no spellcheck, and for IE8, at work.

It's not a "secret" plan. 5GB was originally $30 on Classic so basically BTV-ing it will give it a $15 discount therefore making it $15 overall. It becomes 4.5GB because the new NAC (No Annual Contract Plan) DOESN'T have 5GB but rather only 4GBs however on the new NAC plan you get 500 free MB which is why it becomes 4.5GB.

Yes that is correct, when the new NAC (No Annual Contract) plans came out on March 23rd. Classic upgrades went extinct.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And for those of you who wonder how the new NAC plans work. Here is my QUOTE POST from a different thread:

"I don't understand why people think the Uncarrier is a bad plan. Essentially what happened was with any carrier even US before. If you wanted to get into a new phone. For instance a Samsung Galaxy S4. It's "$150" with a "two year contract". Now that they got you locked in, they incorporate the payment of the device into your monthly bill without you knowing. It's called hidden fees. Now T-Mobile is actually just being more transparent and letting customers know the true cost of service and the true cost of the device because let's be real. Why would any manufacturer create a ~$300-400 device and sell it for only "$150" BUT with a 2 year contract?

Here's a prime example:

OLD Classic 2 Year Contract.........................vs......................NEW Uncarrier Value NO Contract
$60 UNL Talk & Text..............................................................$50 UNL Talk & Text
$30 UNL 4G LTE...................................................................$20 UNL 4G LTE + 500MB Hotspot
...........................................................................................$20 (Samsung Galaxy S4 Payments)
____________________........................................................________________________________
$90 monthly + taxes............................................................$90 monthly + taxes
____________________........................................................________________________________
"Discount/Subsidized" $150................................................. "Down payment" $150
Samsung Galaxy S4 with 2 year contract................................Samsung Galaxy S4 without 2 year contract

"Oh no, they say the phone is now worth $630 + taxes, NOT $150 anymore? What a rip off!'
Why do you think on the older plans that when you want to upgrade BEFORE it was time for your upgrade that it would cost you an "upgrade fee". Essentially what that upgrade fee is just paying off the balance of the previous phone. Except now you have full control of what you are paying and with the new plan you can get into a new phone any time as long as you pay off the previous balance. Once you pay it off, you're completely out of contract and can opt out anytime you want. No more waiting a year or two to get into a new device. 99% of my customer love the new plans. The only ones that don't are the ones that are SUPER grandfathered into older plans like $30 for 300 minutes, typically old people who don't want to get into smart phones usually stay on these plans.

P.S. You can't do upgrades without having to switch over to the Uncarrier plan by the way but it shouldn't make your bill go up unless you didn't have UNL talk and text before.

I just thought I'd chime in and give my $0.02."

Then I might as well get on B2V, keep my myFaves and get a whole lot more data for just $5 more. The equivalent number of lines on a SC plan would cost me $10 more than what I pay right now.

Thanks for explaining this. In the time since I made this topic, I've changed my plan to the following:

Preferred FT 600 NW $50
3 extra lines: $5 each (BTV)
5GB Data Plan on 2 lines: $5 each (BTV)

I believe that I am missing one more BTV discount. There are people at Howardforums with Preferred ft 600NW BTV that is $45 instead of $50.

Do you know what I can say to the Loyalty department for them to understand what I want? I've heard that there is a "SOC Code" for this. Everyone I talk to just tries to sell me on the new plan, despite it being way more expensive than what I already have. I think most people don't even understand what my plan is.

The one for $15 for 4.5 gb isn't BTV plan is it? Cuz when I ask about the BTV plan it was $5 for 5 GB. And the $15 one isn't a BTV so it didn't change any of my grandfathered plans.

Try a few times... Just make sure u are talking to Loyalty.... The worst they can say is NO...

I was even able to add a $10 Loyalty discount for 6 months after getting the $5 5GB Data plan after calling them again... I was within the last 6 months of my contract though...
