T-Mobile $5/month 5GB Data Plan for Grandfathered/Classic Users

Hello everyone,

Recently, some people over at Howardforums on grandfathered/classic plans have discovered that their $20/month 5GB Preferred Android Web data plan was replaced with a $5/month 5GB "Pref Android Web Reduced" data plan. Details are as follows:

-$5/month for 5GB. Throttles after 5GB although some users have reported no throttling at all.

-Only works for Grandfathered and Classic plans, NOT Value plans.

-Get by calling 611 on your T-mobile phone and saying "cancel" at the prompt to reach the retentions/loyalty department.

-Loyalty CSR called it "Bridge to Value Preferred Web" and described it as a way of giving classic plan members a sample of Value cost savings.

-Despite the name, it does not require you to switch to Value at anytime, nor was I forced to extend my contract.

-This reduced data plan is not eligible as a choice for getting an upgraded smartphones. Upgrading a line with the $5 plan will change the line back to the $20 plan. It's not clear whether you add the $5 data plan on a line that has upgraded recently.

-This is not like T-zones/Web2Go in that it WILL work with any Android phone. I don't know about other types of phones.

has anyone noticed if their BTV $5 plan got removed? I noticed my bill was $15 more this month. It looks like the $5 BTV plan went back to the $20 preferred android plan. I found out adding a phone to my cart triggered the removal. Was able to add it back on but when I tried to add the preferred $5 BTV plan to my other lines they would not let me.

Better give them a call. I don't think they'll give you too hard a time about it, since BTV is still a current plan being offered for classic plan members, despite there not being a "value" plan anymore. I just checked mine and it's still at $5 in the current month.

i didnt realize i was talking to regular customer service. Loyalty could only offer the $5 for 2 gb plan from loyalty but at least you can use it with any smartphone.

The lesson is not to add any phones on lines to your cart with the 5 GB $5 BTV plan or else it might accidentally take out the discount. Loyalty cannot add the $5 BTV 5 GB plan anymore just the $15 BTV 5 GB plan and the $5 2 GB plans if you're 18 mths out from your last upgrade.

Also, I noticed that my Preferred FT NW 600 now is called Preferred FT NW 600 BTV. I don't remember if it had that when I originally added the BTV data plan.

That really seems unacceptable. A website malfunction should not cause a 3GB reduction in monthly data. I would have been like, "your glitchy website did this to me... figure out how to fix it!"

I had the same type of thing happen to me when I first signed up for my family plan account. I signed up with T-Mobile on the last day Web2go was offered as an option. When I activated Visual Voicemail on my Nokia Symbian phone, and for whatever reason, that caused my $10/mo unlimited Web2go data to become $30/mo unlimited Android data. I had to call them and have web2go put back on my account. A couple months later, another family member accidentally did the same thing, and and at that point they were implying that it was a huge hassle to put web2go back on someones account, and that they weren't even sure if it was possible any longer... but it was.

You: Cool story, bro.

Me: Thanks. Big Grin

Yeah. The glitch caused a reduction in data basically. I tried to ask them if there was any way they could get it added but they said they couldn't. They couldn't even add my faves to my other line either which I thought they would be able to since all my other lines have them.

The 5GB for $5.00 is still available, I literally just got it today. Loyalty told me that you need to have 5GB $20.00 on the line you want to switch or at least had it before. I first spoke with a regular cs and she can only give me the 2.5 GB for $5.00 so I asked to be transferred to loyalty.

They probably felt guilty that people were wasting money on the old plans. Surprised that any slickdealers were still even on an old plan.

What are you talking about? For people that don't want to use an upgrade subsidy every two years, grandfathered T-mobile plans with BTV discounts are the best possible plan you can have.

Hmm...maybe I will try them again today. My line had the $5 5 GB before then it got switched to the $20 5 gb accidentally.

Update:
I noticed the $5 BTV add a line discounts were applied to 2 of my lines...so even though I lost 3 GB, I did gain $10 a month.

I got the offer to reduce the data plan to $5 when I upgrade my phone last week and my add a line went from $10 to $5. Save me $20 to compensate for the cost of the phone payment.

That's weird that they didn't just switch you over to the simple choice plan instead. You must have got a good employee who recognized classic + $5 BTV was cheaper for you. Or maybe... you're on a family plan which has additional lines which are not out of contract?

When I upgraded online, I had to pay $150 for ETF by the way.

Classic 1000 Minute—Talk - Reduced Price $59.98 per month
NOTE: You are currently receiving a price reduction on your monthly service cost.
By changing your current plan, you may lose your current price reduction.

Data Preferred Androind Unlimited Web Only - Reduced Price $5.00 per month
You currently receive a price reduction on your monthly service cost for this data service.

AAL Fee $5.00 per month

Voice Premium Handset Protection Insurance for Premier Devices $7.79 per month

Voice Unlimited Domestic Messages $10.00 per month

My plan went down $20 before $20 Equipment Installment. I also get corporate discount so pretty much my 3 lines bill is under $100.

they still were not able to add the $5 5 GB plan cause they said the code was unavailable. She was still very helpful though oh well...i guess it is gone for good. they said they would try to add the free myfaves to my newest line though at least which would take 48 hrs. I'm not sure why it takes that long. I also tried to add the free wificalling to my lines which she said may be used against my minutes though. I thought they were supposed to be free otherwise what's the point of asking for it if it's already available on some phones?Confused
