Geico Car Insurance 8% discount for owning berkshire hathaway stocks YMMY

+60 Deal Score

If you have an existing insurance with Geico or planning an insurance with GEICO, this will help you. Also you need to have a brokerage account to buy the shares into. If you already have both Geico and also own some shares of BRK.B / BRK.A call Geico and ask for "Berkshire Affiliation Discount". If you have other affiliation discounts, then this doesn't apply.

1. Buy One or more shares of BRK.B into your brokerage account. This is the stock you need to buy to get discount
https://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE%3ABRK.B
2. Call GEICO customer care 1-800-861-8380 and inform them that you are a share holder of Berkshire Hataway and you want to add affiliation discount program to your account.

They do not check if you really own the shares. Also they won't ask how many shares you own. So buying just one or two will be ok. Also once you are in the discount program you can sell the shares.

For the people who are wondering why GEICO give you discount for owning a stock of Berkshire,

Berkshire is a Holding company headed by Warren Buffet and owns mejority of Geico Insurance Company.

I've always been skeptical of GEICO's supposed 8% Berkshire Hathaway shareholder discount. A lot of people's experiences with it here have confirmed my suspicions. If this were a true shareholder perk, GEICO would offer the same discount to all shareholders without regard to where they live or whatever other discounts they might already have. I'd classify this as a marketing gimmick and not a real shareholder perk. Shame on GEICO.

If you're considering buying BRK stock solely for this discount, you should definitely get quotes from other insurance companies first. I'd say the odds of this discount making GEICO the cheapest option are quite low.

The best Berkshire Hathaway shareholder perk is a ticket to the annual meeting. However, since Buffett didn't like shareholders selling tickets on eBay for exorbitant amounts, he started basically giving them away on eBay [ebay.com].

Thanks OP.

Ahh the insurance industry.... WTF does my stock portfolio have to do with how much money I have to pay to someone who (might) cover the cost of losses related to my, or other people's automobiles? Or my credit score, level of education, etc etc.....

Auto Insurance. Something you are required to have, but when time comes to file a claim, most people will try anything else besides actually telling their insurance company.

[/rant]
Although I wouldn't be surprised if BRK shareholders are on average better risks for insurance companies than the general population, this discount is simply supposed to be shareholder perk. Shareholder perks used to be common but are very rare nowadays. Companies used to mail shareholders free products and coupons redeemable for free things as tokens of appreciation for being a shareholder. Check out this article [wsj.com] for a few present day shareholder perks.

shake head

Please do tell. I have been with Geico for over 7 years now, which has lead to long-term customer discounts. I have done at least 1 car insurance quote every year, and only once found one that would beat Geico (barely) for both my wife and I.

I stayed with Geico, however, because they have best customer service I have dealt with. Aren't you sick of dealing with non-english speaking customer service reps, long-hold times, and bad information? I reward Geico with my business simply for not selling out.

You can buy 1 to be safe.
Even if you don't buy, You can still send them a mail and ask the discount. They don't verify whether you really own the shares

Quote from kg21 :
it can be one of the cheapest ways, always worth shopping around to multiple companies (even if it is a PITA). The ads seemed like typical bs to me but I did save a lot switching from Progressive to Geico. And the main reason was probably not Geico being "the absolute best deal," but Progressive being way overpriced. I had a clean driving record the whole time I had progressive (5 years) and they just refused to lower the price even as I got older and farther way from the dreaded low 20s high risk age. Slightly improved my policy and lowered the price quite a bit by switching to Geico.
best advice for auto insurance shopping is to get quotes from everyone, regardless of what you've heard about who's cheaper or better.

for us, progressive was the cheapest by a huge margin. geico was one of the cheaper ones, while smaller and/or highly-rated companies like amica, ameriprise, and usaa were absurdly expensive and couldn't even be considered.

Just called Geico to try to determine the criteria for this discount since everyone was getting varied results. I was told that it depends on your state as well as the current discounts you already receive, for example a 5-year good driver discount or multi-car policy disqualified me from further discounts.

I also have a discount for subscribing to National Geographic (makes you a member of the National Geographic Society). Sounds like they have a limit on discounts and you can either take one or another.

You can also save 3% if you're a Bank of America customer and link your payments to Geico.

It's all about statistics and expected value. They crunch the numbers for lots and lots of folks and build cost charts.

Credit score 600 - you're going to cost them X in the long run (or bring them Y money)
Credit score 800 - you're going to cost them 0.5X in the long run (or bring them 1.5Y money). Congrats, you get a small discount.

No go for me. They said, I am already associated with a professional group and cannot have more discounts. Even though I do have shares with BRK.B.
