I totally did 15 days in carry on luggage ! The wedding was insanely huge (1200-1400 guests) and beautiful. probably the biggest budget one we will ever attend... It was actually covered on the local news and our hotel told us they saw us it was just the reception and the bride had 3 different dresses; 1 for the press conference, 1 for reception and 1 for the afterparty... Which turned out to be the dancing part of the reception. We had a good time although my overly ambitious dance moves at the wedding landed me a nasty foot sprain that required a hospital visit and crutches/wheelchair for the last half of our trip :/ I danced with the father of the bride, bridesmaids, their tailor that had custom made all the suits for the men and his BF (despite claiming to know no English, he exclaimed to me "I f-ing love you!" ), really anyone that would come near me was in danger of some kind of modified cha-cha. We had a blast despite not understanding any of the toasts and 90% of the music. They are a fun loving people that have rhythm and that's really all you need.
The humidity was darn near unbearable and you prayed for the sun to go away. As for Mosquitos, downtown was not bad but anywhere else we went, we were being bitten throughout the day. When I followed my plan of permethrin-coated clothes plus insecticide for exposed parts, I was completely successful in avoiding bites. When I skipped insecticide once, my feet were covered and it took the zap-it, cortisone cream and antihistamine to keep me from drawing blood from scratching. .
The fashion was really neat to observe and waaaaaay less conservative than it was made out to be. I could have bought so many clothes there, but my immobility put a real damper on it. the people we were with wanted to shop almost everyday which was kind of lame when you think about how far you flew, only to spend all your time in a mall... in any case, is it just me or do they wear their clothes much looser in SE Asia? I wonder if that's out of necessity for the heat/humidity combo. They also did their peplums right - longer and with better structure.
The food was to die for! Omg, I didn't know what I was eating half the time (we had people order for us) but it was delicious. You know what's crazy? They are really good at Italian food. I never would have expected that. DH's cousin would only order that and we would try it and wow! Indian food was good too. I'm told the phö was outstanding. America/Western European was meh. We made it about a week before needing to take peptoB everyday...TMI, I know I really wanted to take a cooking class but our trip organizer put the kabash on anything she was not interested in herself, despite half of us being really into the idea and there being loads of cooking schools around. instead she organized another shopping trip, surprise surprise. Had ppl not spoken up, we would have eaten at trader Vic's, Benihana and Hard Rock Cafe everynight.... very difficult to travel with ppl uninterested in exploring the world around them
We finished moving earlier this week, so I'm not doing great. This has been a rough week. DH is already saying he may not want to stay here. It was his idea to move down here in the first place. I told him I'm not moving again, so he says he'll pay someone to pack everything up & move us next time. He knows I'm too cheap for that though. He would have paid someone this time. I'm sick of moving & am unable to do it again period. Sorry, for the rant. Your post just hit a soft spot. Dealing with so much pain & hearing him already say he may want to move again has made me less than pleased.
.
a friend was just over there in may... right when they declared martial law. what terrible timing. lucky for your party it ended before you guys went.
sad that you had to travel with people only interested in seeing the insides of malls (tho, to be fair, there was a/c and no mosquitoes...) but glad you got some culture in there despite all that.
looks like i'm on your schedule now... this is what happens when i don't have to be at work at 830. not good.

Were you a part of organized tours? Would you recommend taking an organized tour of Thailand?
Usually, I try to avoid organized tours (longer than 1 day) because I don't like being around crowds of people all the time and going at their pace. Organized tours are also much more expensive than what I usually do, but I would be a bit more worried in a country with more of a langage barrier. If you have a few extra minutes, PM me your thoughts.
