wow, what a trip! that wedding sounds pretty epic... sorry you hurt yourself! terrible when you're travelling...

a friend was just over there in may... right when they declared martial law. what terrible timing. lucky for your party it ended before you guys went.

sad that you had to travel with people only interested in seeing the insides of malls (tho, to be fair, there was a/c and no mosquitoes...) but glad you got some culture in there despite all that.

looks like i'm on your schedule now... this is what happens when i don't have to be at work at 830. Nono not good.
It was! Both bride and groom are celebrities in their country, so the fervor surrounding their wedding really made it a "once in a lifetime experience" . I saw photos of their pre-wedding/engagement party and thought we had already missed it (bridesmaids had matching dresses, they had rented out a resort on an island, had dancing, food, toasts, bride wore a super cute short dress with a train). Then they had a traditional ceremony a couple weeks prior to us arriving where they were actually married. During this whole time, the bride had photo shoots in a million wedding dresses along with her fiancee in tuxes for promotions/magazines...they even did a honeymoon photo shoot/promo before the wedding where they flew to some hotel they agreed to promote and modeled clothes for an ad spread. A total dream, I tell ya' . Girly I told DH he is lucky we were already married b/c ooooh the ideas I would get from that reception! drool

Yeah, there weren't many signs of the military coup.... curfew had been lifted seemingly due to the World Cup games. We saw some troops here and there and our van drivers would put some kind of hotel sticker on the car when they picked us up so they wouldn't be stopped at check points. I was following the chaos in May, sorry your friend had to be there during such uncertainty. When we were in the north, there was an explosion that shook the earth, but we never figured out what that was, never saw smoke. It was the only time we worried about it.

Yeah, shopping was good for the A/C, but this person wanted to shop 14 out of the 15 days we were there. It was relentless. When she went with us to a major temple complex, she dressed inapporpriately despite everyone warning her, and quickly got flustered and wanted to leave, telling everyone, "I almost DIED" Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) It's probably her favorite phrase for when she is "forced" to go along. People said they wanted to see more cultural stuff, so she had us load up in vans and drive far out to this place that was like Disneyland or a miniature golf course - replicas of all the temples in the country....although the vast majority of them we could have visited because they were right. there. Such a touristy rip-off at $30/pp and it was right next to a putrid smelling dump. If someone wanted to do something and she didn't (no you couldn't do it on your own b/c then she was afraid she would miss out Annoyed ), she would propose it to the group as, "no one wants to do ____ right? OK" and then survey they other van. We went along with it b/c DH thought he was going to get some quality time in with the cousins that moved abroad when they were young after a divorce, but she actively quashed that too. It appears she does not want her kids to develop any relationships that might take place outside of her - so she has them spend time with her co-workers when they visit and they know them better than their own cousins. shake head I'm very mad for him and SIL...but at least it is clearer now what goes on when they come for a visit here. The 2 days when DH and I pried ourselves away from the group were pure awesome - we ran around and "got lost" (pre-injury) and hired a cab at $10/hour to take us to anything we wanted (post-injury).

Wow. That is a crazy trip/wedding/vacation. Glad it worked out.
Me too Smilie Also good to know that if you are immobilized, they scoop you up at the airport and take care of you (i.e. get you out of the way of the other passengers Wink ).

I'm so jealous! What an incredible wedding, and what an incredible experience all over for you!

Were you a part of organized tours? Would you recommend taking an organized tour of Thailand?

Usually, I try to avoid organized tours (longer than 1 day) because I don't like being around crowds of people all the time and going at their pace. Organized tours are also much more expensive than what I usually do, but I would be a bit more worried in a country with more of a langage barrier. If you have a few extra minutes, PM me your thoughts.
It was crazytown! I think as the thread's wedding attendee queen, you'd appreciate the details/differences. There was a totally open bar all night, live band, food stations all around the room. Where one wedding might choose to have a "sushi station" or something else- they did all of them, made to order everything. It was quite a crush of people though. That is the downside. They do their reception entrance and everyone crowds them so we couldn't see them until they were right next to us and they had seating for maybe 200 guests? We had a family table that didn't have enough so it was basically to sit/eat/put your purse down. Most people just mulled about - so I guess that was a big difference. Instead of doing their vows at the traditional wedding, they make a video of them reading them that they play at the reception. DH's cousin translated for me and they are much the same as western vows - the impact the person has had on them and all they plan to do for them and honor them. The groom likes to sing so he was on stage singing much of the night while the bride was changing into her after party dress. It was so weird, girls go crazy for the groom, so when he came over and started dancing with us, the girls start inching their way over. When we were around town with them, we couldn't go anywhere without him being asked for a photo, especially if the bride wasn't around. All of a sudden, you would just see these girls get this silly googly-eyed look on their face and realize... "uh oh... we gotta get out of here" laugh out loud The cake was crazy huge and cut with a sword. All but the bottom tier were fake, however, and I never got a slice. Although my drunken self told a cousin that if I didn't get some cake soon, I was just going to grab a fistful laugh out loud (I'm a talker, not a doer so there was no fear of that actually happening Tongue ) The dresses were faaaaabulous daaahling! Most were so unique - some peplum satin midi skirt length with sheer panels- totally reminded me of express only in silk. Another thing- lots of ladies wore white or ivory - so totally not a thing. There was zero showing off of boobies. Some do have them, but you won't see them ever, just super tight mermaid dresses.

No organized tour, PM-ing deets.

Wow, sounds like you had an amazing trip! I was lucky enough to get sick only when I got home. Traveler stomach issues are ROUGH! Did you have to worry about that crazy mosquito at all?? It was all around us, we took baths in bug spray!!!
Yes, they are! I had read about taking Pepto as a pre-emptive measure, but we had been doing fine and then uuuuugh. We had the antibiotic with us in case we couldn't get it under control. Always good to have that backup. At times there were clouds of mosquitos. one hotel we were at fumigated the outside area 3 days a week! In downtown, we didn't worry about it much, but the other places - yeah, I either bathed in spray or wore the clothes that had the repellant.

I think she was treated like a princess growing up and found that manipulating people worked for her. She was actively lying to us while we were planning the trip and after we got there too. Just blatant, stupid lies, when the truth would have been perfectly fine. She would leave out large swaths of information and would even ignore you when you asked to her face straight yes/no questions. That was difficult when she made herself our only contact to the native speakers/locals in our group as well as being the trip organizer. I relayed the trip abroad story and some background to my mom and it reminded her of my grandma (her mom), i.e. not really interested in the raising kids part, but when they get older, they desperately want to be buddies with their adult kids and are terrified someone will get in between them, and so, actively sabotages threatening relationships. IMO, that level of insecurity is best dealt with by a professional...and is totally never going to happen. Facepalm

I don't know how far out your move date is but that was one reason I wasn't packed in time Embarrassment It sucks, but if it takes up too much time, it's better to have them move crap then have to move it yourself (assuming you don't have much over lap time on your lease). You could divide into boxes labeled "SORT" so you have all of your "iffy" stuff corralled already and don't have to set it aside from the KEEP stuff while unpacking. Old habits die sooo hard... and is costing us $70/month while we figure it out

awww you guys got a storage unit for your stuff?

i'm trying... i opened the box and have a new pile of brand new toys/other miscellaneous stuff that's going to donation. maybe they can get a few bucks for them. not worth my time to try to sell... i have a pile of "to sell on ebay" stuff too - the more valuable stuff i don't want. *sigh* i go through these periods of wanting to keep everything and then wanting to throw everything away, like a good cop bad cop dichotomy. i really need to just remind myself that during the times of mass purges i have yet to regret throwing something away (or, more likely, i don't remember...). most of the stuff i regret are stuff that i lost.
