This is my first topic posted in the Hot Deals section. This is not really a super amazing deal or anything like that, but, as you know, when you're looking to save some money, anything can help.
I am moving my belongings from Phoenix, Arizona to Denver, Colorado and I was wanting to rent a truck from a renting service to move all of my belongings from the storage unit in a single trip. The price of gas continues to grow and I was dreading the prices that I would have to pay for both the truck and the gas, but I was surprised to find out that it really wasn't that bad.
I received a U-Haul 16" Moving Truck for $150.00 with roughly 1,000 miles discounted from $188.00 with about 850 miles. My total discount was 30% off the normal price.
U-Haul [uhaul.com] is one of the most well-known truck rental agencies. They are located nationwide and they would be the simplest for a move, but their prices and their mileage are far from being the best, so a friend recommended me
Budget Truck Rental [budgettruck.com] with better prices, mileage, and hefty deposits and fees for anyone under the age of 24; additionally,
Budget Truck Rental offers a 10% discount on its regular fee [budgettruck.com] for one-way movers! In addition, there is a 15% discount and 20% discount from my movers' packet that stacks with the 10% discount!
I wanted to stick with U-Haul to avoid the deposits and fees from Budget Truck Rental, so I called them up and price matched the Budget Truck Rental estimate: the 10% off, the 20% off, the price, and the mileage — everything went through perfectly. U-Haul does not have any heavy fees or deposits for drivers, so, like I said, this is an ideal move to make if you're trying to watch your cost or already had a deal with U-Haul.
To summarize, please refer to the following model:
- Are you moving? Go to U-Haul [uhaul.com] and Budget Truck Rental [budgettruck.com] and enter your information for your one-way move.
- At U-Haul, proceed through your reservation as normal. Review the reservation information: price, mileage, and any applicable fees. If you think that you may want to go with U-Haul over Budget Truck Rental, supply your payment information as requested. You will not be charged until the day of pick-up.
- At Budget Truck Rental, apply the 10% discount [budgettruck.com] and proceed through your reservation as normal. You should try to include the 15% off discount or 20% off discount, too. Review the reservation information: price, mileage, and any applicable fees. If you think that you may want to go with Budget Truck Rental over U-Haul, follow the instructions as requested. You will not be charged until the day of pick-up.
- Print out your estimates for reference.
- Compare and contrast each of the providers and pay closer attention to the one that you want to select. If you choose Budget Rental Truck, you're done! If you want to go with U-Haul, call them up, give them your reference number, and ask for a price match with Budget Truck Rental.
- U-Haul will match the price of Budget Truck Rental: discount, price, and mileage included.
I realize that this is not a big secret or anything like that, but I searched over the forums and found very little for Slick Dealers that might be moving, so I thought that I would post this little guide. I hope that it helps someone!

I'm moving from the Bay Area to Los Angeles (picking up Saturday June 22) and here were my results:
Budget.com (with the 20dis coupon code)
Mileage: 469 miles
Rate: $333 60 + $10.50 cost recovery fee = Total $344.10
Uhaul (phone):
Mileage: 452 miles
Original rate: $483 + $5 environmental fee = Total $488.00
Matched rate: $333 + $5 environmental fee = Total $338.00
Penske (phone):
Mileage: Unlimited
Original rate: $800+ (I stopped listening)
Student rate: $746.10. I asked about a PM but they said they didn't PM.
I called Budget back to ask for a lower rate (I made up a rate a little under $300 hoping to get lucky). I knew I could get the original rate by re-booking online, so I threatened to cancel. They said they were unable to match and cancelled my reservation immediately.
At this point, it seems like the rates I listed for Budget vs. Uhaul are set -- does anyone have any thoughts on either company? Or how to get a cheaper rate? I don't think the 17 extra miles count for choosing Budget over Uhaul. My only concern with Uhaul was that I wouldn't know WHERE I was picking up from until a few days beforehand. Additionally, there is 2.5% CB on E B A T E S with Budget, so that might steer me back to them ... and I suppose I could always call the site of pickup to see if they'll give me an additional $5 off to match Uhaul? (Whoops, I just did the math for CB and it doesn't seem worth switching back to Budget for that, so any feedback on either company would be much appreciated!)
Also, any other fees I should be worried about? Do you recommend adding on insurance?
Thanks everyone!
Yesterday, I visited U-Haul, Budget and Penske's website to get quote:
U-Haul: 669, 14', 4days
Budget: 6**, 10', 4days, then I founded promotion code 56000126705 and 56000058459, both of them give 20%off then the price is 577
penske:639, 12', 5days
I didn't have time to call, so I called today.
I tried the first call to U-Haul, after the lady get my information, she gave the same price 669, then give me 20%off, so it's 535.20. I didn't provide Credit card information, then hang on.
Then I called penske, the lady gave me 605. Then I said it's much higher than U-Haul, so she want the price of U-Haul, after I provided, she give me 525, so the final price is 525+9(Environmental fee), 5days. It's reasonable for me, so I reserved it. I also get a free Smart Kart, sounds good.
We are not allowed to discount trucks outright because uhaul promises the lowest overall value without having to give discounts. However we are able to optionally price match depending on a couple of things:
1. Day of your move. Usually if you are moving on a busy weekend such as the end of the month or a holiday weekend, you will have a hard time getting a discount. This is when everyone moves! The companies (uhaul, budget, penske, etc) all know this, so they will be a little bit more hesitant to give discounts. This is because they know they will have enough demand that weekend for customers that will pay whatever price is given without haggling.
2. Make your reservations as far out in advance as possible. It is better to have a confirmed reservation a week, two weeks or a month in advance instead of calling in 2 days before your move. Again this depends on factors such as the day/weekend you are moving, and if its a holiday weekend. The prices increase as you get closer to your move date, so it is better to lock in the lower rate ahead of time (much like an airline ticket).
3. Scheduling and availability may vary depending on when you book. Someone above said that you may not know of the pickup location until a day before. This is true sometimes, again depending on when you are moving and how far ahead you make the reservation. For busy weekends, schedules are manually made in order to make sure there are no over bookings and everyone gets a truck. The downside of this is that yes, you may not get the ideal location you want, unless its a main uhaul center which stocks plenty of trucks (even those run out of trucks on the busiest of weekends). This is true for all companies however and not just uhaul. Another factor that may affect the availability is the previous customer before you. Many people say they intend to use the truck for about 4 hours, and they end up using it for 2 days, this creates a mess with the scheduling because they depend on the previous customer to be upfront about how long they may keep it for. Many people blame the companies themselves for a shortage of trucks on their move date, but there's no much we can do about customers not returning the equipment for the time they originally requested it for.
3. Insurance is optional as many on here have said, however this depends on the equipment you get. Cargo vans and pickup trucks usually require insurance because they are leased at certain locations. I would advise as someone previously has said that if you decline insurance, to check with your own insurance company to see if they cover "rental trucks", as most will usually only cover "rental cars".
4. Specify if you need any accessories (furniture dollies, box dollies, pads, etc) ahead of time. Again, this all goes back to my original point that it depends on what day/weekend/holiday you are moving. Some locations have limited availability on these, so its usually a first come first serve and on busy weekends it can be hard to get them. If you have a morning pickup you should be fine, but it is better to play it safe than be left without these accessories when you most need them.
5. Regarding the comments on old trucks. Uhaul usually has a combination of new/old trucks, and will depend largely on what's available. They are routinely inspected so they should all be in good condition, your safety is important, and I am not trying to sugar coat this. If you ever feel uncomfortable or do not feel safe in a truck, you should immediately call the dealer you rented from and ask to speak to a regional supervisor. He will make sure to address the issue as that truck should be taken out of rotation.
I am available to help anyone on SD who has any questions, needs a quote, or who would like to book a reservation. I will subscribe to the thread to try and keep up with it. I would appreciate any referrals or bookings because we do make commissions off it. Whether you do it online, over the phone or in person it is the same thing because we all use the same system. As long as you have a confirmation number, you can always adjust your reservation, request a price match, etc.
Please let me know of any questions or if something is not clear, and I would be happy to help.
I only need the truck/dolly for a Saturday and Sunday however due to the distance I was forced to rent for 4 days. This did however play in my favor as with my original quote with Budget I changed my pickup day to Wednesday which was cheaper than a weekend pickup and I can still drop it off on Sunday once I arrive.

They're simple to install. Your car already has the threaded holes, they send you the bolts with the hitch. Just line-up the holes and screw the bolts in.
Check craigslist first. Used ones usually $50 or less. I got mine for $25.
