first I was going to say, if only it was inverter

and then I saw it was inverter

you're the generator expert, does anything else come close for $400?

Because you know HF quality, it's not so hot

probably not for 1600 watts but how much watts can you get for $400 elsewhere?

hurricane season coming!

ps. 66db, the gold standard honda is 53db

sheesh, does everyone have a sub-$500 generator now https://www.walmart.com/ip/45013833 - they probably all come from the same one town in China that makes generators

if you can time your purchase to when Amazon/Woot has the Wen on sale for $399 or less, then go with the Wen. the Wen carries a 1 year factory warranty. harbor freight is only 90 days unless you buy an extended warranty.

before you buy a Wen though, make sure you check their support network and see if there is a Wen authorized repair center within an acceptable distance. on the plus side with harbor freight, you can just take it back to any harbor freight store for replacement or repair ship out. if you find there is a Wen repair center near you, give them a call and confirm they are in fact a Wen authorized repair center. an issue i ran into a while back with Westinghouse was that they had authorized centers listed which were no longer affiliated with Westinghouse.

Manufacturer Warranty Detail We guarantee the emissions control system on your engine will be free from defects in material and workmanship for two (2) years, provided there has been no improper maintenance, misuse, or abuse of your engine. We guarantee this product to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for 90 days from the date of purchase. Limitations apply.

yeah they are required to provide a 2 yrs emissions warranty to sell in certain states (ie, California). as a result, they just apply the 2 yrs emissions warranty across the board regardless of which state you are in. it defines what falls under the emissions system as the following parts:

Emission Warranty Parts List.

1. Fuel Metering System
a. Carburetor and its internal parts (and/or pressure
regulator or fuel injection system).
b. Fuel tank.
c. Cold start enrichment system.
d. Air/fuel ratio feedback and control system.

2. Air Induction System
a. Controlled hot air intake system.
b. Intake manifold.
c. Air filter.

3. Ignition System
a. Spark plugs.
b. Magneto ignition system.
c. Spark advance/retard system.

4. Catalyst System (if so equipped)
a. Exhaust pipe stud/exhaust manifold.
b. Thermal reactor.
c. Catalytic converter (if so equipped).

5. Particulate Controls

a. Traps, filters, precipitators, and any other device
used to capture particulate emissions.

6. Miscellaneous Items Used in Above Systems
a. Vacuum, temperature and time sensitive valves
and switches.
b. Hoses, belts, connectors, and assemblies.

7. Evaporative Emission Control System
a. Fuel tank.
b. Fuel caps, valves, canisters, filters, vapor hoses,
clamps, connectors, belts, and assemblies.

everything else is 90 days warranty unless the extended warranty is purchased. i guess on the bright side, the carb is covered for 2 yrs.

Harbor freight has gotten much better these days...sure there is still cheap stuff. I've got a huge 13hp HF...no problems. just don't overload...that's what tears generators apart.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see a USB receptacle like on the Wen 56200i.

correct. no USB port. Harbor Freight shaved a couple bucks off for their version. in their defense though, i have never used the USB port on my Smarter Tools AP2000iQ's. i have charged plenty of devices but never using the USB port. i wouldn't leave my iPhone outside charging nor would i want my $700+ smartphone anywhere near the generator lol

If you buy this item in store and you purchase the warranty, please make sure you get the employee who helped you's 'numbers' and give them to the cashier. Warranties are commission and the person who does the majority of the work, the warehouse member, never gets commission because the cashiers will take them.

Two marginally-related comments:
1) It's hard to buy something like this from HF, something expensive, complex, and something I will need to depend on. I know HF uses many companies to manufacture their products, but so many of their products are just crap and fail very quickly. (And, so often, with just a little better quality of materials, they could have been a viable tool or product.) This generator looks good, but I've been burned so many times, I'm reluctant. I know it's illogical, but that's how I feel.

2) I was pretty sure I knew what an inverter-generator was, but wanted to be sure. I found this article from Yamaha that explains the differences very well, seems pretty comprehensive, and isn't just a sales pitch for their product.

Something to add--the warranties ARE commissioned, but the employee that has informed you and convinced you to purchase the warranty is the one that deserves the commission. If a warehouse employee (they work on the sales floor as well as in the warehouse) talks to you about the warranty, by all means, GET THEIR EMPLOYEE NUMBER. That way, when the cashier offers you the warranty you can say yes, and that Joe-Bob with Employee Number 388299 has already talked to you about it. If the warehouse does not even mention the warranty, they shouldn't earn the commission. Employees are paid to do their job (warehouse paid to fetch your item, load it in your vehicle, etc. Cashiers paid to tally your order and take payment). Commission is offered to every single employee, but only a few will act on it (warranty or membership offering). If the employee chooses not to seek out that added bonus commission, they should not get the payment just because they're doing the "majority of the work".

Highly recommend checking out the review on youtube [youtu.be] before buying, it's the older model but still very relevant.

Beside this genny http://www.harborfreight.com/engi...60338.html I would not hesitate in buying any of the HFT Predators.

We have a 7000 watt Predator with close to 500 hours on it without a hiccup.

I am interested in this new one. I almost grabbed one of the Yamaha's at Costco but it was gone the next time I was there.

Sam's Club has these Black Max Invertor Generators:
1000W (have seen in store) http://www.samsclub.com/sams/blac...8021055.ip
2000W http://www.samsclub.com/sams/digi...3850485.ip
