*Official* Android OS Phone Chat, Questions, & Help Thread -

14,178 1,195 October 22, 2009 at 06:05 PM in Chat
Yahoo!

Our very own thread to discuss and chat about the OS, ROM's, apps from Android Market, our Android phones, tips & tricks, questions, and help issues. With the different phones out now and to be released from various carriers, I figure we all have a lot in common with the Android OS. We can discuss what we like, need help with, what apps are cool or don't work well, as well as questions and help issues. Given that CSR's from the various carriers may know less than we do, this thread is for all of us so we can help one another.

Camera is quick! Mute/speakerphone buttons on call screen (instead of nested in a menu), new default android contact picture, app fixes (I'm not sure on this one... never had the problem), messaging app sleeps.

Also reported stereo/mono headphone fix (never had problem), updated browser (I don't see anything new) and potentially less lag (probably due to phone reboot).

That's what I'm aware of... probably more...
thanks!

how are you liking every other thread being about the same user error issue or if the droid doesn't do ~this~ it's a "dealbreaker"? vomit

I have a guy at work who is still trying to convince me (actually, I think he's trying to convince himself) that, somehow, an iPhone is still the best phone in the universe.

I have to occassionally lay the Droid Smackdown on his a$$.wave

I agree that the iPhone isn't top dog anymore but we cannot forget that it did change the way cell phones are thought of and ultimately used. It was a good idea and a good product. As much as I hated my old iphone, I can appreciate what it created for us all.

Welcome to our little corner of the Android world! I'm an HTC Hero owner and absolutely love the Hero! Still not over the "surprise" stage when I find something else the Android OS & apps do! Yahoo!

Top dog in what sense? IIRC, there's still far more iPhones than Android phones out there. The app market isn't as good either: http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/...?art_pos=1

There is no doubt that there are more iphones than android phones. The link you provided clearly supports that statement as it is strictly talking about how much the developers are making from the app market (more money is made on iphone apps because there are more iphones out there). The app market is different when compared to Ovi, android or any other OS app market. Apple clearly set the bar there and it has yet to be matched. Unfortunately, a well product app market doesn't mean that the phone is the best or most innovative phone on the market.

IMO, the iphone is no longer the top dog (i.e. the best or most innovative phone on the market). Let's go back a few years... when the iphone came out there was the Treo and Blackberry that could honestly compete with the iphone. Which of those would also play music and video and have a big screen and have an app market and have the simpliest UI to ever exist and... and... and.... At that point in time, not a single phone could match (in the overall big picture) what the iphone could offer. It changed the way that the average consumer looked at cellphones. It changed the way that other cellphone companies looked at cellphones. It, arguably, was an extremely innovative phone that changed the industry.

Let's look at more recent... copy and paste just got added to the iphone. Picture messaging just got added to the iphone. Multitasking has yet to exist for the iphone. All of these features have been available on other phones for YEARS! Since the introduction of the iphone a LOT of other manufactures have increased the effectiveness and appeal of their phones....

The iphone may still have the easiest UI but there are other phones that offer more and better options and features then the iphone. The iphone no longer stands out as the "must have" phone. Wait... people are still buying the iphone like candy... why is that then!?!? Plain and simple because people are stuck in their ways and don't like change. It will stay that way until something new and innovative comes along.

My wife is a prime example of this. Sure, she likes my Hero. She thinks it's cool. Why did she just buy another iphone? She was used to it already!!! She knows how to use it, she is familiar with it, she isn't the most technically inclined person out there. She has no reason to change from the iphone mentality because she knows it and is familiar with it. Yet I have owned an iphone and refuse to buy another one because it didn't work for my needs. The average consumer is please with the product but it is no longer the ONLY product on the market that will meet and exceed the needs of a consumer.

Symbian is still the most used UI worldwide. Apple hasn't touched that number yet.... Last time I read, android was supposed to become 2nd sometime in 2010 (can't find the link... sorry).

To wrap it all up: Yes, the iphone changed the industry. Yes, the iphone is still a good phone. No, the iphone is not the only cool phone to have anymore. No, the iphone really doesn't have anything that the rest of the phone manufactures aren't offering. THUS, the iphone is no longer the "top dog" because it is not the INNOVATIVE phone it used to be.

Perhaps it's not just that they are used to it, but that they don't need all the extra features and options?

Perhaps you should create a podium thread so you can defend the iphone over Android. This thread is for chat, honest questions (not fomenting bickering between Android & iphone), and help for those with Android phones. You are welcome to join the thread in the proper light and topics of the thread, but please take your iphone defending somewhere else.

It'll never change....

I claim no brand alliance and will continue to buy whichever product and I'D I like be it Symbian, Android, Win-mobile or any other other product I decide I like or want.

haha, yeah, there are a bunch of previous dumbphone users who decided to get the Droid, so they are the ones that are having user errors. The others who have found something that the droid doesn't do, are just trying to make excuses to keep their iPhones.

I really liked the Hero, but I'm pretty much stuck with Verizon, so I had to go with the Droid! I, too, am discovering new things everyday!
