The fact that HD DVD is dead makes this deal illegitimate, regardless if you have an HD DVD player sitting in your house. Pony up the extra $10 for blu ray.

Correct. HD DVD was in a format war with Blu Ray and they lost. So if you own a HD DVD player, you can play normal DVDs and HD DVDs (similar to owning a Blu Ray player), but you can NOT play HD DVDs...
