FYI - I didn't have to get any vaccinations, nor did I when I went to New Delhi. I don't know about Bombay though.
That said I I once took those malaria pills while in Thailand on a trip and man...

Thanks to all (sorry for late reply). So it looks like malaria is the real concern, and I will certainly get this taken care of. I recall last time I went (2005) a relative had these waiting for me...

CDC has recommendations. Would be most concerned with Dengue fever but there is no shot for this. No shot for Malaria either so take quinine ... better yet have a Gin and tonic every day!

You don't need anything. I have friends (White people who are not Indian origins) who go to India without any vaccinations. They come back fine without any illness.
Just avoid drinking outside...
