I'd use Hercules Plastic Seal or something equivalent. Basically it is like a caulk, but dries into a waterproof sealant and is easy to work with.

What about heat shrink tubing? Probably more of a PITA.
If the wires are inside the posts and the posts are capped, I'd pig tail them and wrap with electrical tape.
