Don't mixmatch ram sticks unless you know what you are doing. IMO just find a cheap 2x4gb set for under 40. Ram does help for 3ds max if you upgrade to 8gbs (performance increase due to dual channel)...

lol That's completely false. Most people won't ever come close to using 4GB, so upgrade to 8GB/12GB/16GB isn't going to do anything for them to speed up their computer or extend longevity.

The use of memory in 3ds Max depends on complexity of the scene. Highly complex scenes require more memory than lesser complex scenes.
