Plausible but i doubt brute forcing is the main cause with so many accts being reported as hacked. Something else has to be going on, but multiple retries and valid LiveID indication surely makes it...

you shouldn't be using the same pws for anything that has access to your financials
If you have a CC on file for any service, they should have unique pws so if one is compromised, you're not screwed...
