From what I hear and the reviews I have read it seems that the difference in energy expenses between LED/LCD and plasma works out to about $20-30 per year... I think this is an acceptable cost given...

Nope, EPP pricing for the 50" is $704, add a few bucks for tax and it came out to $747.
