I'd go for the Touchpad if you want a 10" screen, or Kindle Fire if you're OK with 7". Both are nice devices.

For kids, there is a Leapfrog Leapad. Otherwise, HP Touchpad is $149 but you need to buy a HP $349 + laptop

I have the HP Touchpad and the WebOS is adequate. Android is almost there and will be soon. I would go for the HP but honestly I think 8 yrs old is a little young but that is just my opinion.
