If you do change it from native IDE to AHCI, and you don't have SATA drivers installed, Windows won't boot. Make sure to install all necessary drivers prior to changing BIOS settings.

I've also noticed on boot my SSD is set to RAID. I can't change it to IDE either; it also crashes on boot the same way. I disconnected my included 500gb HD as well, no difference.

As prozac said, I think AHCI is probably the explanation for the crap write speeds. If you let Win7 do the settings when you installed on the SSD, it should be a simple switch in the bios.
