It was new. You are very right about the reason they are refurbished, and after reading several reviews, I am going to pass on this. Seems like I was rather lucky in my experience.

New or refurbished? I expect that every one of these units had a problem with it being as they're refurbished. "Will they again?" is the question.

Don't be tempted. Considering Amazon recently had a brand new 40" TCL, using Samsung S-PVA panels, for $269 shipped (not black friday either), I'd recommend that everyone take a pass. Walmart...

can't decide whether to pull the trigger... warranty is pretty expensive, but on a refurbished element I'd be pretty concerned without one
