Take your current savings, put it in a CD if you don't want any risk. If you're ok with some risk, put it in an index fund. If you're somewhere in between, split it up however you see fit.

assuming 500/month for a car loan @ 5 years w/o downpayment...the car you're looking at is probably $25k or so...
You can get a much cheaper car for less than $20k that gets great...
