They can't really audit an individual and prove they bought things out of state. You could just plead the 5th out of that. But it is a big deal for businesses i hear.

doubtful state would audit you for a few hundred at most. worse case scenario will be a delinquency bill + late payment charges + interest, etc

Correct. This is why some states are now working to change the rules, and make the seller collect the tax in the same way as ordinary sales tax.

There is a standard deduction for "untaxed" purchases--I don't remember but it is really low for SDers. Just use that.
