It should be fairly obvious when you take a picture if there are an issues. Does the shutter make any weird noises, do you see any scratches or shadows in your pictures that aren't in the scene? ...

It's called bracketing. Often done even if you have no intentions of ever producing an HDR image. If I'm not sure my of my metering or just in an odd situation, I just take over and under exposed...

I believe the student versions are the same as the full versions. You just have to prove that you're a student to acquire it. You may want to read up on the process of proving that you're a student.

Well the only reason the count bothers me is because I'd consider myself a moderate picture taker and have had a Nikon D40 for 6 years. Its shutter count is 4500 so I feel like 3000 is a crazy high...

I agree that as far as speed it doesnt really matter much. If you do end up switching the cards from device to device, I would recommend you format them each time in the device so the file systems...
