No, you need to sync your card first, and then when you check in, a special will pop up and a button will be available to "add the special" to your card. The card must already be synced.

So once I synced my AMEX to my foursquare account the special $5 deals stopped showing up on my phone. Also I've checked friends' phones without synced cards and they are still showing up on theirs....

If you are lucky enough to actually see the $5 credit, you have to be near the physical location of the merchant, and check in before it will let you load the deal to your Amex.

You can always use the map feature and place the radar by points of interest...ie your friends house, work, school,etc. Chipoltle always gives me free chips/guac. every time I check in....no AMEX...
