There were two types of memory on sale for$4.50. The one I purchased worked great but Idont know if the other one was compatible. You could also try loading the bios settings to system default.

I've used memtest86 in the past myself -- http://www.memtest.org/
There may be better ones to try, but haven't researched it that much.
