Sounds like your current modem has a built-in VoIP Phone Adapter, which this modem doesn't have so it won't work unless you add a router and a separate VoIP Phone Adapter.

The moment you connect the modem to their network, they control it. They upload THEIR firmware into your modem. If you had a modem working before, I doubt you'll get much more "free" bandwidth.
