IF the license came with your computer (Compaq OEM), then posts 2, 5, 6 and 7 are correct. IF you have a retail license that you bought separately from the computer, then posts 3 & 4 are correct....

Compaq versions of OS are for that PC only and the same would hold true for Dell,HP,Lenovo version of an OS.

Most likely you'll have to call microsoft to activate your windows. Just tell them your MB died and you're replacing it. They might just activate it for you since XP is old and they probably don't...

You will have to reactivate Windows after the installation but you should be able to use that install disk.
