more like, why invest in a NAS that only contains 2 drives. yes. really.
Post #49684812 added 04-30-2012 12:04 PM by namlook in Archived Deals
Because it has a lot of great features and many people don't need more than two drives. Seems like common sense that not everyone needs more.

I agree about Amazon since currently it is $189 with free shipping and no tax. Better deal to be had there. What I'm waiting for is a deal on the DS112....

i think its worth the $100 to step up to the regular ds212 (non-J)... the hardware encryption engine makes a huge difference

forgive me if I'm way off base here, but wouldn't an e350 or even better an 1155 Celeron build be more capable for le$$?

yes it would more than likely but this is more for those who don't have 2 hours to put it together and install their OS of choice. I say 2 hours as many like to exaggerate and say hours/days,...

Other than storing and sharing files, why am I paying $300 for a driveless NAS. I could see if you had expansive needs, but for the simple needs, I don't see most folk making full utilization of it.
Post #49620182 added 04-27-2012 8:23 PM by norazi in Archived Deals
you are storing 1,000's of Gigabytes of data... the fact that it is on a redundant drive array means that the data is of some importance to you else you would be using a simple $20 external USB 3.0...

Yea I never quite understood it to be honest. For $300 you can build a small server that would be significantly more powerful than these. I'd take FreeNAS with ZFS over this any day. Still...

Good point. Once you get much over $200 it makes sense to build your own box. I picked up a refurb 211J for $130 through Amazon so I'm happy at that price point.

Of course a 5-disk setup is better, but you're also talking a huge jump in price. Synology's 5-bay NAS is the DS1511+ and it costs around $1,100. They make a 4-bay, which is what I really hope to...

Completely useless reply. Go troll somewhere else. I've had 3 211j's running for the last year with NO problems at all. I'm very happy with their performance as file servers, and even use 2 as...

I got DS212 for its around 16Watt power consumption, since I am running it 24x7. BTW, is it normal for just around 55MB/s write/read speed? Is anyone getting higher speed?

I only store music and video on the NAS and none of it is anything personal. I keep a back up of everything separate from the NAS so I guess encryption is not too important to me. I would not use an...
