a TI-89 is the last calculator you'll probably ever need. in science & engineering it's a must have, but if you're not planning on going to calculus and beyond, it's mostly overkill.

You're right that in calc classes you probably won't be allowed to use a graphing calculator at all, but once you're past that point it's no big deal.

My son used his in SAT testing without any problems. He used the standard keyboard from TI though, not the N-Spire keyboard. I don't think he ever used the N-Spire keyboard.
