My 2 cents you can get flexible copper connectors to make things easier to line up Did you mean Ball Valves or gates? I always have preferred ball valves since they don't get crudded up over time....

My wife and I just tackled this same type of install. OP, you might want to take a look at your softener before you go buying parts for a bypass. Our Kenmore came with it's own built in bypass valve....
