1 year warranty only? I'll pass.

wrong samsung is indeed owned by seagate but samsung still manufacturers all the parts for their drives. the only part seagate plays a role in now is their crappy firmware. I spoke with a rep that...

Ecogreen? So does that mean this is a 5400rpm or 7200rpm drive?
Post #50248284 added 05-18-2012 9:25 AM by Tytalus in Archived Deals
Someone else posted the whole 72-hour sale, but this individual item is a FANTASTIC price for a 2TB drive! With the flooding issue in Thailand last year hard drive prices significantly increased...

In for 2, with 3% FW cashback. It's not too bad. I was planning on waiting but nothing has been really diving in prices with HDs. These will work great in my Synology NAS, should last me a few years.

care to elaborate?
Post #50231260 added 05-17-2012 6:17 PM by Bringtherain in Archived Deals
well this happened when the acquisition first started so it mightve changed.
Obviously they meant Seagate took over Samsung's HDD division (as we're in the context and thread here about hard drives, don't be daft). These newer Samsung drives are indeed MADE BY SEAGATE with...

Because there are only 2 hard drive manufacturers left and they're price fixing to keep HD prices artificially high. This drive should cost $65, max - the same as it did before the flood.

SAMSUNG EcoGreen 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal HD With this promo code: EMCNEJB48 NewEgg 72-hour weekend deal!
Why wouldn't they? RAID 1 is simply for redundancy (mirrored blocks), not performance. The original Samsung F4 works great in NAS units (I have 6 of them). Lower power requirements, less heat,...

Why all the thumbs down?? This same thing was a front page deal on May 9, no less than 2 weeks ago!! Is slickdeals that fickle??

Pulled the trigger and then read the reviews. Wow, extremely negative. Thankfully Newegg is able to cancel my order. I'll wait for the WD Greens to go lower.
not bad, temping even....

Yes, but Toshiba isn't competing in the 3.5" mass-storage market. They're focused on 2.5" and enterprise. For now, Seagate and WD have the large drive market entirely to themselves. It could be...

Samsung, a company with $200+ billion annual revenue; is owned by Seagate? I think you need to check your facts. Just because they acquired their HD business doesn't mean they "own" Samsung.

Wait until Seagate and WD merge
Post #50229742 added 05-17-2012 5:26 PM by runnin17 in Archived Deals
Do not be fooled. Samsung drives are no longer Samsung drives people. Everything is made by seagate. The only thing that is Samsung is the name. This is very sad, but it is very true. Seagate blows!

If these are 5900 RPMs, then these are completely different from the 5400rpm Samsung F4's.
It is thumbs down since the drive Seagate is selling as the Samsung HD204UI *is not* the original one. Seagate simply rebranded their own inferior drive. An original Samsung HD204UI @ $99 would...

It's not really newegg's fault. They are working with the shady crap Seagate is pulling using the Samsung model number to take advantage of its excellent reputation.

So, would people recommend this for a NAS server if they're gonna be in RAID 1?
Post #50241346 added 05-17-2012 11:57 PM by Bringtherain in Archived Deals
yeah sorry for the language but i was typing in general. isn't it obviously that they don't own samsung? i think anyone who read my comment would understand that seagate did not acquire their entire...

Yeah, a pair of these will be fine for a RAID 1 storage drive. Yeah, that's exactly what he was asking about. RAID1 in NAS = storage, not OS disc.

wow after reading all the info from the first post, how did that make it to the front page? It sounds like newegg is being very shady w/ their egg review system....

Post #50231308 added 05-17-2012 6:18 PM by Silver5656 in Archived Deals
i believe you are correct, when seagate first acquired samsung, they intended to leave them as is but obviously that has changed

This is a Seagate drive.
The previous wiki pretty much sums it up.... :( You can still get the original Samsung F4 for $109.99 if you go this route...

Yet their prices were just as high as everyone elses. Don't give me supply/demand either, it was price fixing. If they kept prices fairly normal, they wouldve had practically 100% market share

Got two from the last frontpage deal. One died in two weeks, had to RMA. Another one is clicking all the time. Definitely not the same drive although look almost the same outside. Don't buy this...
