Actually on the MB/BMW/Volve cartridge type, you don't throw the top piece away. It's a cap w/ a stem attached to it. Here's a photo of that...you slide a filter cartridge onto it......

I use this tool everyday on Honda filters. You just gotta hold the tool and apply some pressure to grip and then turn the ratchet. I haven't found a filter this couldn't take off. But... almost...

Tested and returned a HF version of this "claw" for oil filter removal and it just slipped + slipped until the rubber tips ripped. Exchanged it for a HF locking lobster claw and never slipped again....

My Dad always taught me to coat the rubber gasket on the head of the oil filter with oil to get a good seal once you put it on. Then and tighten.
