I use a Magic Jack that costs $30 per year and I can phone anywhere in North America for free, unlimited calls and/or time.
Works very well.

What you're talking about is confirming a number whether to add your phone to facebook or for security reasons. Both of which are OPTIONAL. You do NOT need to add your phone much less a random phone...

Your best bet may be a pre-paid phone.
Go to Walmart and look at Straight Talk options.
There is Net10.
There is TracPhone as well though.
Pay for what you, when you want it, and refill when...

If you have a spare/old t-mobile or unlocked GSM phone then buy the T-mobile sim activation kit for $0.99 which I believe comes with 10min air time then you should be able to received a text or two....
