Good for you. It is ill advised. Why take an unnecessary risk? I've used vrbo many times without incident. Hawaii is also a bit different as there has been a serious crackdown on unlicensed rentals....

Don't use craigslist for vacation rentals. It is much too easy to scam on there. Stick with www.vrbo.com and www.homeaway.com
