Can't vouch for Minecraft in particular...and this may not be that helpful to you..but what I can tell you is, if Minecraft supports splitscreen multiplayer, you would not need ANY Xbox Live Gold...

What cable are you using to connect the Xbox? AFAIK, it needs to transmit an HD signal which means you can't just use the red/white/yellow cable that you used on the SD tv.
