This is an extra step but i use JPEGtoPDF. that program is free, but of course, you need the scanner software to scan and then use JPEGtoPDF to convert them to PDF...

Cute PDF, but I scan to printer (as in scan to print it out) and use cutepdf to make it a pdf. (saves the extra step in Superocean's method)

I use PDFCreator (free and open source). I don't normally scan and convert stuff but when I do, it works fine. I scan into jpg or tiff. When I'm done scanning, I drag and drop all of the the files...

What model scanner do you have? CUTE PDF is the one I use. First scan the doc into jpg or something and print to pdf using cutepdf.
