Component cables were the connection of choice before HDMI. You can find Component on most older A/V hardware like cable boxes, TiVo's, etc...
Some newer hardware only has HDMI.

Thanks for the info. I only have 1 component device---a DVD player/recorder. So at this point, I assume using the receiver's component inputs is moot. What other devices use component cables?

Some receivers enhance the signal. See if your does. And just an fyi, the component cables only do the video portion, you need to also connect to the digital output to get audio.

With the receiver you can use your home theater speakers, which are much better than the TVs speakers. I would defintely take advantage of the home theater speakers. You might use SPDIF if supported....

The benefit would be if you had two component devices. You'd only be able to connect one to the TV at a time whereas with the receiver, you could connect both, then switch between them.
