To my knowledge these JEDEC standards apply to both SO-DIMM (laptop RAM) and DIMM (desktop RAM). Am I missing something?

Not so, recently Newegg, Tiger Direct, and Newegg (again) had Patriot 4GB ddr3-1333 for $10 AR, limit one. When you need something, though, it seems that way.
