Ifl didn't buy the 999 mbp because I thought to hold off for a better deal and this might be it.

Does Frys discount an extra $100 if you're a student?

No, they do not.

I was ready to pull the trigger until I saw this, thanks. Also, no SSD which should really be standard in a laptop this expensive. Looks like I will be waiting for a deal on a MBA.

I got the MBA myself, but the MBP had certain advantages - - upgradeable RAM (MBA is soldered) - replaceable battery - optical drive - bay can be fitted with a second drive (think SSD + 1 TB HD)...

Good catch. I am not sure what Intel is trying to pull by naming 2 core processors with the i7 convention. It's almost deceptive marketing IMO.
Post #51980012 added 07-27-2012 9:31 AM by zhopa in Archived Deals
Not exactly. It's more of a total performance thing. In the desktop space: i3 - hyperthreading, no turbo, dual core i5 - no hyperthreading, turbo, quad core i7 - hyperthreading, turbo, quad...

False. 8GB is all that Apple offers but you can install and have the system recognize 16GB.

Officially no, but it works if you try. :bounce:

I need to move out of fry's state to not be nailed with $120 in taxes and fees on top of the $1350. Comes to almost $1.5K :(

Same here! I keep thinking that, as well as getting a Kohl's card (which is easier than moving). I had a 3rd wish, but they actually built a couple of Harbor Freight stores on Long Island, so I got...

Thanks, I didn't realize the "i-level" feature relationship.
Post #51976278 added 07-27-2012 6:54 AM by Neo42 in Archived Deals
Well it is further complicated if you just think in terms of i3, i5, i7 across both desktop and mobile. In Desktop you have quad core i5, quad core i7+HT or "8 logical cores". Are there i3 desktop...

how does this compare to 999 deals??
Post #51978292 added 07-27-2012 8:23 AM by metaclass in Archived Deals
No, the $999 Air was the best deal. Do not waste your money on those 13" MBPs with a crappy screen even having less resolution than the Air. Go for the Air or wait for the 13" Retina MBP. Period.

waiting on the 13 inch retina.

I don't think it's deceptive at all. Processor ending with M are mobile, dual core, whereas, the ones ending with QM are quad.

For clarification, they are distinguished by features, not by cores. i3 is the base. i5 has turboboost, and i7 has hyperthreading. i3 can only be dual core. i5 and i7 can be either depending on...

I think Mountain Lion restricts some features to OEM SSD, so you may want to research into it.
Post #51979596 added 07-27-2012 9:13 AM by marsels in Archived Deals
While the base MBP CPU is 2.5ghz and the base MBA 13" CPU is 1.7ghz, the MBP gets only about 10% higher scores in synthetic benchmarks. I don't believe the SSD affects this, since Geekbench focuses...

I'd get a retina macbook if I could upgrade it on my own...too bad. The 13" i7 isnt a quad, by the way.

I'd wait for a deal on an i5 MBP. You can now get SSD drives cheap and install without voiding your warranty (despite what some people say). And, while the screen is slightly lower resolution than...

Picked up the $999 deal for $949 from Best Buy and will be getting like $25 back in reward zone. Also got it sweetened with 18 month financing and picked up a samsung 830 256gb for $190. Much better...

That's because the Intel chipset that Apple uses SUPPORTS it and Apple surprisingly didn't put a BIOS lock on the RAM. Apple uses a lot of Intel technology so all you have to do is read the...

Why do people buy these? I can understand the Airs (I have the 2011 13" myself), but the 13" MBP still has that paltry 1280x800 resolution..
Post #51980178 added 07-27-2012 9:36 AM by zhopa in Archived Deals
Don't kid yourself, the difference between the screens isn't going to prevent you or enable you to do any "design" work. You can. HD is on a slot card. RAM is soldered.

an i7 is too much cpu for most folks, especially apple folks. i guess if you're willing to shell out this much, then an i7should be standard
Post #51978832 added 07-27-2012 8:43 AM by metaclass in Archived Deals
For me, the only drawback of 13" MBP is the screen resolution. I'm always using hi-res screens and even my 4-year old ThinkPad T400 has 1440*900 resolution. I just cannot accept anything lower than...

Great points. Also MBP has firewire 800 and a heck of a lot more CPU for the price. With the price of RAM these days you can get 16GB in there for just over $100.
