That can happen if the only match was a post that was deleted as spam but the search index hasn't fully updated yet.

I've had this happen before, but, I can't see why it happens.
I went to search for the scientific america model 2100 cablemodem, and used the searchterms scientific 2100.
The results say that...

if you search for ladder
it returns alot of results, including 12 frontpage deals.
when you click on the 'frontpage' tab, to examine them, it shows none, that's pretty weird.
