Won't get much for $250 unless you go used but then you need to know what you're looking for. Department store bikes are all junk. Your best bet is http://www.bikesdirect.com

I did look at Bikesdirect, the only one really in range has horrid reviews. I'll look and see if I have those shops locally, thanks!

Did you look at Bikesdirect? Also, if you have a REI or Performance Bike near you they might be worth checking out.

I'm realizing that my ceiling isn't very high. I was hoping I got get a K2 from Sports Authority with a coupon but didn't realize the coupons excluded K2.
I'm going to hit up a bike shop soon...

Then you're definitely going to have to buy used or raise your limit because anything you find at a store for about that price is going to be worse than what you'll get at bikesdirect.

I would look around for a local bike shop and ask if you can try a couple of bikes, get a feel for what you like/etc.
