So, how does one "get all of their data back and wipe their drive clean" when it doesn't work? If the drive suddenly fails, your only method of getting data back that isn't backed up elsewhere will...

If you already have an SSD and just plan on using this HDD for storage I would get something slower / cheaper. The Caviar Black's are fast (for HDD's that is) performance drives and really shine when...

I wonder if these would work better than the green's in a RAID 5. I have read that WD has crippled the firmware (on these blacks) so that they won't do as well as they could when RAID'ed

I don't feel like a 1tb drive is good for a boot drive.... maybe an SSD + a few 2TB is good.

I think people are buying this as their main hard drive or use it to load up apps as it can be pretty fast. If you are just using the hdd for storing movie and music, I think it is better that you...

Except that it doesn't actually mean the drive is any more reliable, just that the manufacturer is willing to offer replacements on it for a greater length of time, and they have that figured into...

I already have a 120gb ssd for my boot drive. I could use this drive for my games and programs....
You're right. The warranty doesn't imply anything about reliability. The reliability study that ranked the 1TB black among the most reliable 1TB drives does though.

Bad sectors are normal, are not a "defect", and are not covered by warranty. The drive is not "broken" just because it has bad sectors - ALL hard disk drives have bad sectors. The controller...

For performance, I have to go with black. I'll keep my green 2TB drive for backups.

well bad sectors make a drive broken but you can still recover data off it.

Great drives but I have a hard time believing that I paid ~$30 more ($129.99) almost 4 years ago for the slightly older version of this drive (w/32MB cache, etc).

Awesome, my SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM failed on me just shy of 2 years (hurray for chase extended warranties!) so I picked this WD up from microcenter for $110 last week after taxes...

Well, sure is a good thing that Western Digital will send a replacement drive to you in advance so that you can recover all your data now, isn't it? You get all of your data back and you can wipe the...

True, IF the drive is working. I think his point was that you cannot recover data from a dead drive - and why would you return a drive for warranty repair if it is working? FWIW, the way they...

I use a green drive for my file server as the storage (not the OS) and it works well for that, but the 5400RPM would be undesirable for running an OS & programs. The black drives are about as fast as...
