I'll try one out. Just ordered one from Amazon. I have given away a ton of the Syma's to friends and co-workers as they are cheap, fly easy and are pretty tough.

unfortunetly, no it won't. you need a DSM/DSM2 reciever to work with the Spektrum transmitters. all hobby grade things are like this, receiver has to match the transmitter.

I've bought these kind (looks exactly like what JCP sells, ExecuHeli something). It's cheap plastic and the balancing bar on top of rotor breaks easily.

Yep...definitely a good starter. I'm tempted to get another one to give to the kids who want to fly my V911. But I'm pretty sure it'd get away from them (so the Syma would be the sacrificial lamb)....

the linked syma doesn't "strafe", it's 6 directions are up, down, forward, backward, and ROTATE left and ROTATE right. The really fun ones let you strafe (or move sideways) as well. Under $20...
