Serado and Traktor products are what I was thinking of. They were originally mac only, but now most are cross platform. Makes sense with the explosion of EDM/DJing. Ableton is more for production,...

Personally, I would go with a $500 laptop that I bought on special for $350 and buy the Audio engine speakers, for a total of $550.
If that's not an option, then I would be looking at the Beats...

Such as VirtualDJ, the DJ software for Windows that's been around since the early 2000s?
Or are you talking about controller software, like Ableton Live (also for Windows)?
I think you'll find...

The laptop is not going to make the difference, the difference is what you plug the laptop into. You will not hear a difference between a $100 used laptop and your $500 HP beatzAudio if they are...

I'm not sure there are any.
I know some or all Macs do, but I've never seen one on a Windows laptop.

This is true in a generalized matter. I believe for the most part Beats audio enhancement is just software, so it probably won't even work with the DJ software, especially if you use some type of...

Lenovo Thinkpads tend to have the optical output combined with the stereo miniplug port. XPS laptops have S/PDIF as well, I think. I don't have a full list of laptops that have S/PDIF out. It may...

That's an excellent question and there is no good answer for laptops in that price range.
The manufacturers can boast all they want about how great the audio is on such and such model laptop, but...

Macs are frequently used because they're cool and DJs try to be cool. Unfortunately, too much "I'm cool" attitude tends to lead to crappy DJing. I was at a bar where the DJ was trying to hard to act...

My uncle wants a laptop primarily to play his music, maybe potentially even doing some DJ-ing (nothing crazy, family parties). Important is good playback and the ability to hook the laptop to audio...

Good info. If $500 wasn't a limiting factor, is there any laptop at all out there you would recommend as decent? If $500 is a fairy tale, I'd like to tell him what is realistic. Thanks.

I would have supposed that the upper echelon laptops would use a better D/A converter, after all, that is where the quality is going to come from.
The software is just fluff and amounts to an...
