hdmi only will give you display only.
if you want to use the keyboard and touchpad and usb ports, then you would need to connect the microusb.

I have a MAXX and this lapdock. Im looking at extensions over mod. Do I need to connect the HDMI AND the usb to make it work, or is the USB simply for charging purposes???

Best costwise would be to get the lapdock 100 for $ 50 from verizon corporate stores. It isn't as nice as the atrix lapdock, but it works with the maxx out of the box and you can dock the maxx...

all you need to do is pop off the cover, unscrew the (2) side screws then carefully pry apart the plug piece from the base, behind it you will find 2 more screws on a metal bracket holding the plugs...
