As long as it fits completely under the fly it would make a good ground cover. Too bulky for backpacking, but I suspect it would be fine otherwise.

the tarp will be too heavy for bpacking. I would get some tarpveet, usually they have that at construction site or you can buy it on ebay. Much lighter and stronger than the tarp.
