No you do not need to install any extra software. this drive should work right out of the box... power plug, and connect USB to PC... look under 'My Computer' folder to see the drive pop up.

Got mine from the previous deal. Used Macrium Reflect to back up my main PC's drives onto it over USB 2. It ran for about 19 hours or so laid flat on the top of the PC and was just slightly warm.
