It's the packaging. My 4 Red 3 TB drives came from US NCIX and were packed with love and care. All 4 are perfect. Newegg doesn't pack mechanical hard drives right and the higher death rate from...

I just bought a seagate 3tb for $125 at Newegg a couple weeks ago. While I greatly prefer WD, and this has a longer warranty, it definitely doesn't seem to be worth the ~50% greater cost.

The Red line was designed for NAS environments, for those wondering.

Another thing to consider about the Reds is they have some of the lowest power ratings. For those of us that run 10+ drives, THAT makes a difference.

Interesting, I've never even heard of the RED line from WD? Is it supposed to be a little more enterprise class?

I have 4 of these drives, they are all perfect. That's much better than my usual rate with mechanical drives. Just watch out for their return policy, it's absurdly terrible.

Yes. They are for 24/7 NAS use (tested for up to 5 or 6 drives in a single NAS). 3-yr wty. Most reviews look good. (Unsure if they work fine when more than 5 drives are used).

Green for SLED, Red for RAID.

Regarding the WD Red line, they talk about it in this review of a Drobo NAS: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2012/09/synology-ds-412-is-fast-fun-and-flexible/ Go down to where it says "Choosing...

Red is oriented at NAS or server environments and has longer warranty! They are slow speed IIRC, so think of them like Greens, but better for said case uses. That said, if it's not for those uses,...

but it's also made for business NAS environments. If people are buying these to stream videos off of, a green is all they need.

WD Reds have TLER, which allows then to cooperate with hardware raid controllers. They have 4 stars at newegg but if you actually read the reviews they are pretty scary. Lots of reports of...

These are made specifically for NAS boxes with advanced firmware and some new hardware that WD came out with. They also have vibration dampening built-in to help increase the lifespan of a NAS drive.

good deal for those that don't live in CA. I rather get it from Adorama for $199 no shipping and no tax. Adorama has a much better reputation than CTI and they have it in stock as well.

Instore only and limit of 2. That's why.

Its actually only 3 year warranty. The coolspin version has 5 year warranty. I agree its only instore but you can surely pickup more than 2. I bought 4 of them for my new NAS.
