I have an M14xR2 and a 15R, the M14 gets 6+ hours with the screen dimmed down and wifi on, and the 15R usually gets close to 4 in the same conditions. Dell battery life seems fine to me.

If you're planning on getting a 2.5" SSD to replace your HDD as the boot drive than you don't need an mSATA SSD as cache from what I've read. I'm still using the 1 TB 5400 HDD with the 32GB mSATA...
