If you're spending the premium to buy tide detergent I would think you would use the proper stuff designed for your style of washer. If you're going to ghetto mix incorrect stuff, why not just buy...

Agree that it costs less, but Consumer Reports has Tide detergents ranked 1-6 and 8 while Sears ranked 11.

I agree with you that you shouldn't use non HE detergent in an HE machine. Although now I'm curious, how does that impact a top load HE machine?

The problem I found with Ultra is that it would cause my clothes to shrink quite drastically, while I never had any shrinkage with Tide. Just my experience, not necessarily the same for everyone.

I would think that would be a result of the drying method. Why do you feel the detergent played a role in shrinking the clothing? We have never experienced this problem.

You can't use non HE in an HE machine because HE detergent creates less sods. This is because in the HE machine, there is less space. Using non HE in an HE machine will likely cause it to overflow...

Less water is used in HE machines....hence HE (high efficiency). That's why low-sudsing HE detergent is needed.
